DESCRIPTION: Baths at the Magnesia Gate entrance to Ephesus, Turkey. Ephesus is the arguably the best-preserved classical city on the Mediterranean. It was founded about 1500 BC, although the ruins which have been excavated are primarily from a more recent civilization. Ephesus was razed by conquerers and earthquakes, and was rebuilt each time, until the Goths destroyed the city in 262 AD. Excavation of the ruins has been going on since the mid 1800s.
