Leaving Keflavík

Our last day in Iceland dawned sunny and cool. We had a nice leisurely breakfast and said goodbye to Eric and June, who were staying an extra day.

We checked out of the hotel and drove into the center of Reykjavik, to Part 1 of the Volcano Show. Some of the show was quite interesting, with scenes from the Vatnajökull glacier and Lake Mývatn eruptions from the 1940s through the 1990s. Unfortunately the film quality was mostly poor, and the script was disjointed much of the time.

Then we went to the Krindlan mall and spent an hour or so looking for souvenirs. We bought shirts at the Hard Rock Cafe there, but we had lunch at the food court, which was interesting because it was not geared to tourists. We placed our orders, then waited for them to call out our numbers in Icelandic!

Then we drove to the airport and boarded the plane home, with a new understanding of and affinity for a land of many exciting contrasts: fire and ice.
