DATE: July 28, 2004
PLACE: Santorini, Greece
DESCRIPTION: Akrotiri, a Minoan city of about 30,000 people on Santorini, was covered under about 6 feet of ash when the volcano exploded in 1650 BC. Unlike at Vesuvius, no bodies were found, so it appears that everyone was able to be evacuated before the eruption. Only one golden object has been recovered, which indicates that they had ample time to remove their valuables as well.
